LESSONS FROM OSUN GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION

Image
The governorship election in Osun State was conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the 16th July, 2022.  The incumbent Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola lost to the dancing senator, Ademola Adeleke by about 28,000 votes. The conduct of of the election by INEC  was adjudged by observers as a marked improvement over previous exercises conducted by them. There are some lessons that we can learn from the exercise. YOUR VOTE COUNTS. As a result of the introduction of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) by INEC, and uploading of the results from the polling units, voters and politicians alike now know that votes will count and the problem of overvoting has been addressed. One vote now counts as one vote.  INSTANT UPLOAD OF RESULT SHEETS FROM POLLING UNITS. As a result of the uploading of results from the polling units, which is accessible to anyone who has internet access and is signed in on the INEC results page, the possibility of tamp...

Kagoro killings: Account of a survivor.

Image
I, my wife, mum, Smith, Ngunan, Auntie Justina along with other maternal aunts and uncles visited one of my maternal in-laws who was a survivor of the Kagoro killings of February, 2022 at his Kagoro residence, today 10th July, 2022. His late wife is my mother's sister. Even though he survived, he lost his wife and two of his children in the attack. He has one son and daughter left. The daughter is married.  He described as the bandits came in buses and surrounded the neighbourhood and started burning houses and shooting indiscriminately. They were said to be armed with very sophisticated arms. His daughter, Anita, my cousin was just recovering from hip replacement surgery she had about 3 months before then as a result of gunshot injuries sustained in a similar attack by bandits.  His account was so emotional as many of my aunties were sobbing and shedding tears. Even though his house was not set ablaze, life no longer has meaning to him as he is left alone to mourn the b...

COMPLEXITIES OF THE INVITRO-FERTILIZATION (IVF) PROCESS

Image
Invitro-Fertilization (IVF) is the treatment option reserved for certain forms of infertility whereby a baby (embryo) is formed by mixing sperms and eggs together, or by injecting sperms into eggs, It is usually done for couples with problems with the fallopian tubes, untreatable sperm issues and women who are menopausal. Despite its role as a solution to otherwise hopeless cases of infertility, it comes with its problems. IVF is a process that is naturally very expensive, irrespective of location of practice. This has made this procedure inaccessible to many infertile couples that would want to benefit from the procedure. Hospitals in low resource settings like First Fertility Hospital, Makurdi have adopted a strategy of reducing the cost on individual patient by running a batching system for running IVF. By this strategy, resources all polled from all potential clients and the procedure carried out for them at the same time to reduce cost. A couple suffering infertility is usua...

R.Kelly sentenced

Rhythm and blues star, Robert Kelly, popularly known as R.Kelly has been sentenced to thirty years in jail for teenage sexual assault and sex trafficking.  R.Kelly is someone I looked up to as a youngster for his talent and entrepreneurial feats. He wasn't just a good singer, churning out award winning beats every now and then.  The 55 year old was the classic story of a self made and successful singer, song writer and music producer. What we didn't know was behind all the glamour, there were dirty happenings that I would not be proud of. It's said that not all that glitters is gold. R.Kelly has proven that to us. Presently, I can't say I'm proud of him for all we've found out about him in the course of his trial and sentencing.  May he learn his lessons. So sad.

Daddy, why do you have to work everyday?

I was confronted with this question from my 3rd daughter, Iveren. My children have gotten use to me working everyday of the week, including weekends, public holidays and festive periods like Christmas and New year.  Even when I have to take them out on festive periods, I still find time to go to the hospital before catching up with them. My job as a medical practitioner and business manager requires that I along with my fellow managers are always on our feet to ensure that we deliver the quality of services expected of us. We have a brand to protect and improve on.  My answer to Iveren was that alot of people depend on me and I have to make myself available to them constantly. I hope she understood?
